Holocene Sea Level Rise in Boston Harbor

Human
activity becomes evident in the Boston region ca. 9000 years ago. At
this time, the sea was approximately 25 meters below its current level.
The location of Rainsford Island is identified by the white arrow. Sea
level change is based on a Relative Sea Level (RSL) curve of the Boston
area by Peltier and Tushingham (Science 1989).

Rainsford Island Stone Hospital

Rainsford
Island served as a quarantine station and hospital for the City of
Boston for nearly two centuries. The Stone Hospital was built on the
island in 1832. Photograph ca. 1900.
